Wooden Boat Festival

11 03 2009

A large contingent of Port Adelaide masters and masters from other clubs competed in the rowing events at the Wooden Boat Festival at Goolwa on 7 and 8 March 2009.

Day 1 was wild and rough in the best traditions of the ‘Goolwa/Hobart’.  Boats filled and nearly sank, rowers’ teeth chattered, and crews jumped in fright as waves crashed over their heads.  It has to be said that at times we wondered what on earth we were doing out there in the surf.  Nevertheless, it was on that day that we scooped  two of the three rowing trophies presented in the Festival:

Trophy for the fastest scull:  Sue T, Helen, Paul and Dave (Vicki cox)

Trophy for the fastest eight:  Sue T, Helen, Paul and Dave (Vicki cox) with Goolwa’s Stef, Sue, Cam and Rob

We would not miss this for all the world.   We thank Goolwa for their generous hospitality, especially the superb seafood dinner and the delicious  breakfast after the long race on Day 2.

Biglands and Doyle

10 02 2009

Congratulations to Wayne Severin, the winner of the 2009 Biglands and Doyle Trophy.  This annual Australia Day event, run by Rip Van Velsen, is a knockout series in which entrants are randomly put into crews beginning with eights and ending with a single scull.  Congratulations also to the runner-up, Alex Brook, a member of our senior women’s squad, for her strong and courageous performance in the final.  A great day was had by the large numbers of club members and their families who attended despite the heat.
